Flexible Hose Applications in Oil & Gas: From Refineries to Offshore Platforms

Flexible Hose Applications in Oil & Gas: From Refineries to Offshore Platforms

Where stainless flexible hoses do the quiet critical work across upstream, midstream, and downstream oil & gas — and what specifications actually matter when failure isn't an option.

Oil and gas is the single largest market for industrial flexible hoses, and for good reason — every stage of the value chain has thermal cycling, vibration, and aggressive media that rigid pipe simply cannot handle.

Upstream: Wellhead & Drilling

Wellhead hoses connect Christmas trees to manifolds and handle mud, produced water, crude, and gas. Vibration from pumps and compressors would crack rigid piping in weeks — SS braided hoses absorb it for years.

Midstream: Loading Arms & Transfer

Truck, rail, and marine loading arms rely on large-diameter composite and SS hoses for crude, condensate, and LPG transfer. Dry-break couplings and emergency release systems are mandatory.

Downstream: Refineries & Petrochemicals

Inside refineries, flex joints absorb thermal expansion on hot process lines — crude distillation, reformer, hydrocracker. Steam tracing and jacketed hoses keep viscous streams flowing.

Offshore: FPSO & Subsea

Offshore platforms add seawater corrosion, 100%-humidity chloride atmosphere, and H&sub2;S sour gas. SS 316L is the minimum; for sour service, NACE MR0175-compliant grades are specified.

What to Specify

  • API 7K / API 16C ratings for drilling service
  • NACE MR0175 for sour service
  • Fire-safe design per API 607/6FA for ESD applications
  • Full material traceability and third-party witness on critical assemblies
